The Maintenance Guys

With winter season fast approaching, it’s time to embrace the changing seasons and prepare your apartment for the chill days. In this maintenance blog, we’ll share five ways to create a much cozier apartment space.

1) Installation of a heater

Installing a heater is a great choice to improve comfort and warmth in your apartment. Heaters are known to improve air quality by removing moist from the air creating a dryer, mold free and healthier space. Whilst considering these benefits it’s also important to choose the correct heater type and size to ensure cost effective and energy efficient heating that meet New Zealand’s Healthy Homes standards.

2) Sealing up the gaps on exterior doors and windows

Front doors and windows often allow cold air to make its way into the apartment if they’re not sealed properly. Prepare for Winter by inspecting your exterior doors and apartment windows for any possible gaps. Doors usually have a large gap at the bottom which can be minimized by installing a draft stopper. Any loose or broken window handles, damages seals, broken stays or hinges will prevent the window from closing properly. By simply tightening those loose handles or changing out the broken parts with new parts will make the world’s difference.

3) Choosing the right curtains or blinds

Curtains or blinds act as a good barrier to keep cold air from entering through the window. Block out roller blinds are extremely trendy for living room and bedroom windows, easy to use and will not only change the look of your space instantaneously but will also block out cold air from entering the room. For curtains we suggest choosing double lined curtains that reach the floor. It’s also a great idea to keep your curtains or blinds open on sunny days as sunshine will heat the room during the day. But remember to close it at night as this will trap the warmth inside and keep the cold air behind the curtain or blind.

4) Cleaning air ducts

Improving ventilation in your apartment can be as simple as cleaning the air ducts which are usually located in the bathroom or kitchen ceiling. Dust can build up in air vents over time and without regularly cleaning it can become blocked. Dusty vents can limit or prevent fresh air to enter the room which can cause a stuffy nose during winter. If you’re not sure how to do this yourself give our maintenance team a call and we can get this sorted for you.

5) Installation of a dryer

During the winter season we can expect an increase of rainy days limiting the time for washing to dry outside. Benefits of using a dryer includes but are not limited to:

  • Not relying on the weather to dry clothing,
  • Speeds up the process of drying,
  • Softens fabric,
  • No need for drying racks that take up a lot of space, and
  • Saves heaps of time as you don’t need to hang up clothing.

It is also important to choose a suitable brand and size dryer to fit your apartment.
